Happy New Year!, Omaha NE

My favorite shot from downtown Omaha, my mom posing by the lights along the Gene Leahy Mall. Thanks for driving me mom!

Happy New Year everyone on smugmug! I really appreciate all or your support and helpful advice. My New Year’s resolution is to travel outside of the US in 2013. Of course I want to accomplish a lot more than that…

We’re off to Colorado for Nini’s first ski trip ever, and my first ski trip in about 15+ years. Wish us luck!

Wide Ice Reflections, Omaha NE

The downtown Omaha skyline from the Gene Leahy Mall. The ice had just frozen over the previous night so it was still fresh and clear. It was only 10 or 15 degrees, but there was no wind, so it wasn’t too bad.

This is a single two-minute exposure. I used a circular polarizer to bring out the reflections in the ice. I set up this shot right when I arrived at this location and then put this camera on the inervalometer so that it would continue shooting into the blue hour while I played around with my other camera and lens to get this this shot that I shared the other day.

Gold Holiday Reflections, Omaha NE

This is the view of downtown Omaha from the nearest reflection pool in the Gene Leahy Mall. From left to right are the First National Building, the Union Pacific Building and the Century Link building. Being so close to downtown I had to break out my widest angle lens and get my camera really low into the water to try and capture the entire reflection. My camera was about 6 inches above the water. It was bitter cold and my tripod started to freeze in the water.

This is a single 2-minute exposure taken with a circular polarizer to enhance the reflection.

I hope that everyone had a merry Christmas! We spent the whole day hanging with our family so it was awesome!

Blue and Gold Downtown Reflections, Omaha NE

I love the view of downtown Omaha from the Gene Leahy Mall, which is not a mall in the sense of having stores, but rather, is a 10-acre park that stretches from downtown in the West to the Heartland of America Park (30 acres) in the East. A shallow lagoon flows through the mall all the way down to the big lake at Heartland of America Park, providing lots of opportunities for reflections. In this case the reflection is on ice, and those are snowballs in the foreground that people had thrown from the bridge. Dad and I went on this shoot together, but we split up, with me opting to stay close to downtown, while dad hiked all the way to the far East side of Heartland of America Park for his reflection. It was kind of a role reversal because I was about two minutes from the car and he was about a 20 minute hike away!

This is a single 30 second exposure. I used a Sing Ray Blue ‘n Gold polarizer to make the blue hour sky and gold reflections pop. I rarely ever use this polarizer, but since the sky was pretty boring I gave it a shot. This is a pretty popular angle to shoot the city, but I added a slight twist. Instead of shooting from a pedestrian bridge that crosses the lagoon, I crossed a bit of ice-covered lagoon and shot from a small island in the middle of the lagoon. At least it was a new angle for me, and it got me a lot closer to the water’s edge where I could maximize the reflection. Check out my HDR photo from the pedestrian bridge
last year to compare.

Merry Christmas Eve!!!

Pink and Blue to Grandpa’s, near Gretna NE

Over the river and through the woods to Grandpa’s house we went for an early Christmas dinner. This is the view looking out over the Platte River valley on Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska. The Holy Family Shrine can be seen on the left side of the horizon. It was a cloudy sunset so the sun didn’t make much of an appearance, but about 20 minutes after sunset a ribbon of pink and purple lit the sky. The dinner was lovely too!

This is a single 30 second exposure. I used a 2-stop hard-step neutral density filter to reduce two stops of light above the horizon.

Downtown for the Holidays, Omaha NE

My favorite city in the USA. It's great to be home for the holidays. We were greeted with 8 inches of snow within 24 hours in town. Mom took me downtown to photograph the holiday lights with all of the fresh snow. The driving conditions are slick, but she's a pro.

This is a single two minute exposure.

Gas and Guns, Oklahoma

There are 129,817 licensed gun dealers in the United States. There are 143,839 gas stations in the United States. And then you have the rare, gas and gun convenience store...

Two things Americans love, guns and gas.

The rate of gun ownership in Oklahoma is 44.6%, which is the 19th most in the country. The rate of gun deaths is 14.46 per 100,000 people, which is the 11th most in the country.

The Sala Straddle, Nacogdoches TX

Our newest addition Sala straddling the couch and arm chair so that he can get into the warmest spot on either piece of furniture! He’s four months old now and still a totally awkward puppy. His legs are way too long and his paws are too big, so he falls down a lot. I swear he somersaulted into my lap the other day. He’s healthy, neutered and gaining weight every day, so I think he’s on the road to success. Big Red did bite him once and Sala has definitely learned the lesson: don’t mess with the big boy. Now that he’s recovered from the neuter we’ve been hiking the last few days and he follows the pack really well, never straying off too far on his own. When I command Big Red and Cheech to heel, Sala falls right in line, though he’d never do it if the other dogs aren’t there because he barely knows his name, much less any other command other than sit. But despite not knowing many commands, he already knows the rules of the house and the pack, so I think he’ll turn out to be a smart one. He sure is good at opening our screen doors!

We’re off to Omaha! We must be crazy to leave high temps in the mid-70s for temps in the mid-30s, but hey, it’s the good life, the Cornhusker state, and there’s no place I’d rather be. Bring on the cold.

Rusty Portrait, Nacogdoches TX

My portrait skills are a little rusty, so Nini let me practice with her a bit on Sunday. It was very cloudy so we had a nice soft fill light to work with. I've been keeping my eye out for abandon buildings and other locations I can use for free. This one is only a few blocks from our house.

This portrait is lit with one speedlite shot through a beauty dish above and to the camera right of Nini. The rest of the light is fill from the cloudy sky. I softened her skin and sharpened her eyes in Lightroom 4.
