Self Inflicted Corporate Headshot, Billings MT
I finally bit the bullet and made some self portraits. It has been a long time coming because I’ve really wanted to have a nice portrait of myself on my website. Adding a photo of yourself shows that you’re comfortable on both sides of the camera, which can build trust while letting your clients get to know you. Well I hope my clients don’t read this, because I was totally uncomfortable on the other side of the camera! Actually I had a lot of fun playing with my lights, but posing was very difficult. I think it’s because I couldn’t see myself or even imagine what I was doing. I have a great eye for spotting what is wrong with a pose and correcting it, but without seeing myself I was pretty helpless. I could make a pretty funny blooper reel for sure! But that’s part of the fun of it. Nini and I were laughing for a good hour looking through my horrible poses!
I used three lights for this portrait. The main light is a beauty dish above my head and coming from my side camera right, creating a Rembrandt lighting pattern on my right cheek. The second light is another beauty dish just above my camera and slightly camera right (the strobe itself is probably about a foot above my eye level). This second beauty dish is creating the round catchlight in my eye and softening up the shadows a bit. The third light is a bare strobe with reflector behind me camera left a foot or two above my head putting the tiny highlights on the right side of my face and my right ear. The third light is crucial for separating me from the black background. The background is a 4’x8’ piece of styrofoam painted flat black. I use Alien Bees AB800 strobes.
