Black Faced Tiger, Nacogdoches TX
The black faced boy keeping guard over our backyard, grazing like a cow! He’s such a mysterious looking dog and his mystery has only grown since we named him the black faced tiger. Now parents around our neighborhood tell their kids to beware of the black faced tiger! Just joking, we’re the only ones who say that! But you do have to be on the lookout for him because he blends into the shadows so easily we often lose track of him when he’s right under our nose.
All of this talk of the black faced tiger reminds me of a few lyrics from Mos Def, one of my all time favorite artists: “I’m blacker than midnight on Broadway and Myrtle.” I can’t believe that line has been in my head for going on 14 years! The lyric refernces the corner where Mos Def is from in Brooklyn. It’s from the song “Mathematics,” on Mos’ 1999 debut album “Black on Both Sides.” The song also makes note of grazing cows, although it’s not a pretty image: “Killing fields need blood to graze the cash cow.” See below for the rest of this rhyme.
Not many people wanted to discuss Chicago’s alarming murder statistics yesterday, or Kanye West’s poignant lyrics about murder in the Chi, and I understand that. I wasn’t expecting much on a busy Thursday and am guessing that the smug daily community is not super fond of rap music. But I encourage you to check it out if you’re interested in Chicago or have never read any rap lyrics. The lyrics are quite unique as Kanye points out “they say you can rap about anything, except for Jesus.” The post is here: http://smu.gs/15UB9lR
Now to continue the rhyme from Mos Def’s “Mathematics” :
Killing fields need blood to graze the cash cow
It's a numbers game, but shit don't add up somehow
Like I got, 16 to 32 bars to rock it
But only 15% of profits ever see my pockets
Like 69 billion in the last 20 years
Spent on national defense but folks still live in fear
Like nearly half of America's largest cities is one-quarter black
That's why they gave Ricky Ross all the crack
16 ounces to a pound, 20 more to a key
A 5-minute sentence hearing and you're no longer free
40% of Americans own a cell phone
So they can hear everything that you say when you ain't home
I guess Michael Jackson was right: "You Are Not Alone"
Rock your hardhat, black, cause you in the Terrordome
