Cliffside Sunrise, Columbia MO
Another photo from our recent sunrise on the cliffs of Capen Park overlooking Grindstone Nature Area. I liked how the colorful light from the sunrise was starting to spill onto the cliffs. Big Red and Cheech actually walked through this frame but the exposures were too long to get a good shot of them. If they had posed nicely on the cliffs just in front of me I would have opened up the aperture a few stops and caught them. But they just wanted to pester me a bit and then go back to chasing squirrels and butterflies.
Some people get worried when their dogs get too close to the edge of the cliffs, and I can't blame them because people have fallen from these cliffs before, even though it is a popular rock climbing location. We've always let Big Red and Cheech roam free on the cliffside and they always do really well, as have all of the dogs I've been around on the cliffs. Cheech is actually a master mountain climber! But always use extreme caution when photographing from dangerous locations. I know it seems like I take a lot of risks, and I do, but I am very cautious too. For instance, while taking the multiple exposures for this photo, I was actually embedded in a large pine tree just out of frame to the left, and had three or four feet between me and the edge. When I go out to set the tripod up, I crawl on all fours! I'm actually very scared of heights.
This is a five exposure HDR. I use Photomatix for combining multiple exposures and tone mapping and then process the photo in Lightroom 4. I applied the exact same settings in Lightroom as I did on yesterday's photo, so any differences in color are a result of the changing color temperature that occurs as sunrise unfolds from cold to warm. This photo was taken before yesterday's but only by a few minutes.
